There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be open handed toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.
2013 hunger statistics by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) states: The number of hungry grew in Africa over the period, from 175 million to 239 million, with nearly 20 million added in the last few years. Nearly one in four are hungry. And in sub-Saharan Africa, the modest progress achieved in recent years up to 2007 was reversed, with hunger rising 2 percent per year. Since then 20,000 children die each day around the world.
Developed regions also saw the number of hungry rise, from 13 million in 2004-2006 to 16 million in 2010-2012, reversing a steady decrease in previous years from 20 million in 1990-1992 (FAO 2012).
The above is based on the new estimates of world hunger by the FAO using revised procedures. (Lappe, 2013).
It is against the background of the global economic downturn that the founder of GPRI thought it would be wise to set up a body or organization that will aid in addressing the menace of poverty in Africa in particular and the globe in general.
God commands us to take care of the poor and needy in our land; the current poverty rate in the world has prompt us to take action. The conflicts in Africa and around the world, have brought about countless anguish to its citizens and inhabitants; to name a few: Syria, Sudan, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo etc. Even countries like Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Rwanda, whose conflicts have ended for over a decade, the fight still goes on, as they now face a new battle – against poverty. These unfortunate situations have led to the unavoidable separation of most kids from their parents, while others lost their parents and families permanently. Women have been greatly impacted as they are victims of rape and countless injustices, which have led young women to subject themselves into prostitution as a means of survival. The recent Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, will leave countless orphans, it is our responsibility to find a home for these kids. Our goal is to build an orphanage that these kids will call home, a place where they will be able to find love and compassion.
Children are being forced to wander about the streets in these countries and getting involved in activities like; robbery, drug abuse, prostitution, drug-addiction, lawlessness, etc. just to survive. Quite a large number of these children have no dwelling places, decent food, or clothing. Most people pretending to be helping or caring for these children end up taking advantage of them and thereby exposing them to even greater danger, like child trafficking. Most children are not allowed to attend school and are used for different forms of child labor and slavery.
